The ZZ Series Engine In Your Vista

The Toyota Vista is one of the many cars to come down the production line of Toyota, and when the 1998 model year was released it carried one of the most sophisticated and powerful engines any car by the manufacturer ever had.  The engine was the ZZ series engine.  It was a 1.8 liter engine that could produce up to 141 kW.  Knowing the type of engine that is in your Toyota Vista will make keeping the car running smoothly important, especially if you export your Vista from Japan using a Japanese used car exporter.  This is just one of the many engines produced by Toyota, and not all Vista’s had them like Honda cars.

The Toyota Vista sedan and its sibling Vista Ardeo wagon came with the 1ZZ-FE engine, an economic piece of equipment that ran the vehicles perfectly.  Each of these engines had a bore to stroke dimension of 79×91.5mm and was capable of displacing 1794cc.  The Vistas had a 10:1 compression ratio in its DOHC, four cylinder engine and it utilized variable inlet valve timing.  When run on normal unleaded fuel - the standard for today’s cars - the ZZ engine could produce 96 kW of power at 6000 rpm and 171 Nm at 4000 rpm.  The Vista was produced in a front wheel drive, automatic transmission - there was no manual version offered - and the ZZ engine was transverse mounted in the engine compartment.

While the engine was upgraded in 1999 for the MR2 and Celica SS-1, the original ZZ was left in the Toyota Vista.  The 1ZZ engine was eventually used in the Corolla sedan although the ratings were different than those in the Vista, giving the Corolla sedan more power than the Vista.  The Opa Van also received this particular engine in 2000.  The high rating on the engine that was produced in the Corolla was extended to the 2000 model year of the Toyota Vista and the Vista Ardeo.

Even though there was an improved 2ZZ engine available, Toyota never put this version of the engine into its Vista vehicles.  There is no reason why, other than the 2ZZ engines had more power and higher ratings, possibly too much for the overall construction of the car.  Most mechanic shops today understand the workings of the 1ZZ engine, but if you should happen to bring one of these Vistas into the United States using a Japanese used car exporter make sure you know which engine is coming with your car.
